School Leadership

Founder/Executive Director: Norma Figueroa-Hurwitz was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico and moved with her family to New York City at age 9. She completed her undergraduate degree at City College, going on to receive a Master's Degree in Education Administration in 1975. Dr. Figueroa-Hurwitz founded the first magnet school in New York City (B.B.M.S.) in 1973. In 1980 she took over as principal of P.S. 83M where, over her 23 year career, she raised student performance from the lowest quartile to the third quartile in both ELA and Mathematics. In 1997, she was selected as a Distinguished Principal by the New York City Department of Education. With this scholarship, she completed her Ed.D. in 2001 at St. John's University. Dr. Figueroa-Hurwitz holds herself, her teachers, and her students to the highest standards, believing that great leadership comes from building a foundation of academic excellence. Norma co-founded Academic Leadership Charter School with her husband, Ted Hurwitz.

Elementary School Principal: Leena Varghese. Ms.Varghese was raised in the Bronx and attended NYC Public schools. She is committed to high quality education for all children. As a founding teacher at ALCS, Ms.Varghese strongly believes in the mission of the school and ensures the entire school community works together so all students succeed.

Middle School Principal: Jaime Kennedy. Ms. Kennedy was born in Bombay, India, raised in Queens, and spent her adolescent years in the suburbs. She was also a founding teacher at Academic Leadership Charter School and has had the opportunity to enrich ALCS youngsters as they have grown into young adults.
Ms. Kennedy works closely with middle school students, parents, and teachers to ensure the school mission is achieved and prepare students for high school and college readiness.
